Lessons for Grades 1-3

A clear path for learning to tell time

Start with the skill a child can explain today. Each step connects to a short lesson, online practice, and printable work.

Skill progression
Hours and halvesFirst read the two hands
Five-minute timeCount around the clock
Minutes and intervalsRead, add, and compare time

This sequence uses the Common Core time expectations as a planning reference: Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Schools may introduce the skills at a different pace.

Match the path to the child's current skill

A child who is unsure which hand shows the minutes should begin at Grade 1, even if the class has moved on. A child who can read five-minute times quickly is ready for exact minutes.

Grade 1 1.MD.B.3

Hours and half hours

Learn which hand shows the hour, which hand shows the minutes, and how analog time matches digital time.

  • Tell and write times at :00 and :30
  • Notice how the hour hand moves between numbers
Grade 2 2.MD.C.7

Five-minute time, a.m., and p.m.

Count by fives around the clock, then use the event and time of day to decide between a.m. and p.m.

  • Read analog and digital time to the nearest 5 minutes
  • Use a.m. and p.m. in daily schedules
Grade 3 3.MD.A.1

Exact minutes and elapsed time

Read every minute mark, measure time intervals, and find a starting or ending time by counting forward or back.

  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems with time intervals

A practical teaching sequence

Move on when the child can explain the answer, not only guess it correctly. Short sessions with one skill at a time work well.

Where should we start?

Hands get mixed upStart with Clock Basics and the Grade 1 level.
Five-minute times are slowStay at Grade 2 and show the minute numbers on the interactive clock.
Exact time is easyMove to elapsed time and ask the child to show each jump.

Use the interactive clock while you teach

Set the movement to 5 minutes for Grade 2. Switch to 1 minute for Grade 3, and use Demo Mode when the clock needs to be clear on a classroom screen.
